Portland Maine has been a homeport for Coast Guard Cutters throughout the Twentieth Century, In the mid 1940’s Coast Guard 327 foot Patrol Gunboats (WPG) and 311 foot Seaplane Tenders (WAVP), finished with WWII activities, were stationed in the northeast with a principle mission to engage in ocean weather observation. A number of these vessels, “Weather Ships”, were homeported at Portland to fulfill this service and other services associated with lifesaving, search and rescue at sea. Of note, is that many of these vessels were also engaged in Vietnam Service during the late 1960’s, then either turned over to the South Vietnamese Forces or returning for decommissioning. A large contingent of Coast Guardsmen from areas across our nation and US Territories served aboard these vessels during these 40 plus years.
The Portland Maine Cutterman’s Association originated with a couple of renowned Coasties formulating a Reunion for Portland Maine Weather Ship Sailors. This idea was expanded to include all Portland Sailors and associates with a 1st Reunion of Portland sailors being held in 1986. The Reunion being an incredible success, caused incorporation of this organization in 1988 which has since produced 5 subsequently successful Reunions in Portland. We would like to invite you into our organization and to our future Meeting & Reunion events.

Purpose of the Association: The founders of the Association desired to form a nonprofit corporation for the purpose of promoting charitable fellowship and furthering the camaraderie of Coast Guard personnel, both active and veteran. This has been accomplished in the forming of a voluntary nonprofit corporation by the name of the Portland Maine Cutterman's Association. The principle purpose of the Association is ;
1) To provide social and recreational activities for its members by providing a medium and coordinating association which organizes and promotes reunions and other social gatherings and functions; 2) To assist disabled and needy war veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their dependents, and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans; 3) To carry on programs to perpetuate the memory of deceased veterans and members of the Armed Forces and to comfort their survivors; 4) To sponsor or participate in activities of a patriotic nature and to promote the social welfare of the community; 5) To provide entertainment, care, and assistance to hospitalized veterans or members of the U.S. Armed Forces.
